Fun and Spills at Babinda Kayaking

“Ahhh, the serenity” said Rob my partner whilst we were paddling down the creek with Babinda Kayaking.

This was just before our kelpie Archie decided that being in the water was more fun than being on a kayak. Honestly it was like having a 2-year-old toddler along with us.

Drifting down the creek was peaceful…

You hardly had to dip your paddle in to keep the kayak in forward motion. The current of the creek did that for you. Ripples on the surface were a sign that the ‘rapids’ were up ahead which just meant you were spat out a little faster at the end.

Don’t expect a guide with you on your Babinda Kayaking tour. There’s a brief lesson on how to use a paddle and then you get to navigate your own way down 9-kilometres of river till you pull up near the little township of Babinda. If you have a dog with you, you may find them swimming the whole 9-kms like ours did!!

On the way down we spotted kingfishers and cormorants and the odd turtle in the creek. We also found some rope swings to play on and the occasional sand bank to pull up on.

If you bring a picnic lunch you could easily make a day of it BUT we opted to do the ½ day cruise which took us 3-hours. It still gave us plenty of time to stop and play. All up Babinda Kayaking was very kid friendly and a great day out for the family.

And as for our kelpie - well he was flat out exhausted when we got him back home. A sign of a good day out for sure….

Good Things to Know:

  • Morning hires (start at 8am) must be finished by noon.

  • Afternoon hires (start at 1.30pm) must be finished by 5.30pm.

  • Open 7 days a week including public holidays from 8.00am to 6.00pm (bookings are essential).

  • Kayak & SUP hire is dependent on current creek conditions, which for the most part are perfect for paddling. Babinda Kayaking doesn’t operate during very heavy rain and flooding and will wait for the creek to subside before running kayaks & SUPs again.

  • This is a one-way trip only, paddling back to the hire location is not an option.

  • Don’t miss the Babinda Bakery which makes the yummiest homemade pies and pastries.
