9 Best Playgrounds North of Cairns to Mossman
Ask any Cairns local where are the best playgrounds and you’ll undoubtably hear Muddies, The Pirate Shop, Figtree and Goomboola park. These are certainly fantastic playgrounds, but venture further to the North and you’ll find even more awesome playgrounds, that you may not have known about before…
We’ll show you the 9 best playgrounds from Smithfield to Mossman – in order from south to north - a Playground Crawl if you like. And spoiler alert, you may be very surprised to find out the best one is in Mossman!
1. Rainy Mountain Park, Smithfield
Starting at Smithfield is the Rainy Mountain Park playground. An all ages playground with plenty of shade. Located behind the Smithfield shopping centre, this park features a massive, grassed area with numerous beautiful trees under the backdrop of the “mountain” ranges.
The playground is new and modern featuring bridges, climbing wall, climbing nets, slides, monkey bars, balance discs, swings and plenty more interactive and fun features to get the kids entertained for ages. Suitable for all ages.
This park is really big, plus there is a fenced dog park here too.
2. Bluewater Trinity Beach
Hiding away in the new Bluewater residential suburb of Trinity Beach is this amazing all ages playground. Well designed to keep the bigger kids separate from the younger ones, this playground has it all – except for toilets and shade! That aside, it’s very popular here and kids can play for hours without getting bored!
The designated toddler area has a play ship to explore with steps and platforms, swings, a toddler sea-saw and other brightly coloured interactive play games and musical type equipment.
For the older kids there’s a dual flying fox, large climbing rope frame, with seats and rope ladders, as well as a high slide, low slides and a couple of spinners.
3. Coastwatchers Park Trinity Beach
Also in Trinity Beach, on the main road heading towards the beach is the Skatepark and Coastwatchers playground.
This skate / scooter park is a hit for the young kids as well as the older ones. If you have younger kids we recommend coming early in the morning or during school time to avoid all the teens!
This park actually has two playgrounds, with the better one being near the entrance and the skate park. The playground is suitable for all ages, however is ideal for older kids rather than toddlers, although there is a toddler swing here.
While in Trinity Beach, we recommend actually going to the beach and perhaps taking a walk up the rocky end of the beach as something different for the kids to explore. There is also a very small playground on the beach front at Trinity Beach too.
4. Clifton Beach Playground
Ideal for young to mid age kids there are slides, monkey bars and tunnels. Plus the view and setting here is just spectacular. Bring a picnic or cook something up on one of the free BBQ’s.
Throw in the kids scooters or bikes as there is a bike path all the way along the beachfront.
5. Palm Cove Playground
This brightly coloured playground is always busy – not because it’s necessarily the best playground around, though the kids seem to love it, but because it’s in Palm Cove!
Situated on the Esplanade opposite some of the best restaurants and cafes in Cairns, a stop here is a must, especially if you have younger kids. The playground is half fenced and right on the beach.
6. Big 4 Glengarry Park - Waterpark & Playground, Port Douglas
You don’t need to be staying here to enjoy the waterpark, pool, tipping bucket, jumping pillow or playground. You can purchase a day pass from reception, currently at time of writing $15 per person or $50 for a family of four, which will allow you access to all of the facilities between 10am and 5pm. 7. Hutchings Park Port Douglas
The Hutchings Park and Playground, located in the residential suburb of Port Gardens is an all ages playground. The brightly coloured playground is suited for all ages, and there is plenty here for toddlers and younger kids to keep them entertained.
There are BBQ’s, picnic tables and toilets here as is reasonable close to the Wildlife Habitat.
8. Rex Smeal Park, Port Douglas
NOTE: This playground is set to be replaced by a new one in 2022.
Rex Smeal Park and playground is a lovely open area park offering fantastic views of the Port Douglas inlet and rainforest. The playground is better suited for younger kids and consists of a couple of swings and a Pirate ship.
Very close to the main street and the marina, and easy to walk to. The markets also set up near here on Sundays.
9. George Davis Park, Mossman
We saved the best for last – this park is simply awesome! (ok maybe not so awesome as the water park – but this is free!)
Featuring a Fully Fence Playground, Pump Track in the shape of a crocodile, basketball half court and the skate park.
The asphalt crocodile pump park is suitable for scooters and bikes – the actual track is the shape of a giant crocodile’s head.
While in Mossman we recommend checking out the Mossman Gorge – the gateway to the worlds oldest rainforest. With easy walking tracks and boardwalks, going with the kids is fun as you can use the stroller to access all the main views and vantage parts of the park.
