Insider Guide to Port Douglas – 6 Local Tips from Kate at Lady Douglas River Cruise

Years ago in another life I worked side-by-side on the Great Barrier Reef with this lovely couple, Kate and Lucas. These guys have since gone on to own and manage one of the best little tour operations in Port Douglas, the Lady Douglas River Cruise.

Kate is a life long local of Port Douglas and Lucas is a highly qualified skipper and engineer with extensive experience and knowledge of the local area. Together they make a great team and have recently proved it by winning the Best Rainforest and River Cruise at the 2015 Port Douglas Business & Tourism Awards.

They're also proud parents of a small tribe of children so I knew they would have some great family friendly tips on things to do in Port Douglas....

1. Why Port Douglas?

"Port is definitely one of the best locations in Australia, we travelled the East Coast two years ago and found it hard to beat. It has reef, beaches, rainforest, 4WDing, creeks and an international airport all within an hour or so! It's really family friendly and a great place to raise young kids."

2. Best Coffee?

"Best coffee is Origin Espresso just off the main drag (Macrossan St)."

3. Favourite Food Spots?

"Our FAVE food spots would have to be On The Inlet, Salsa and Harrisons."

4. Best Local Escape?

"Our best local escape is Yungaburra or Lake Tinaroo on the Atherton Tablelands, especially in the summer when we have the stingers."
