Family Friendly Accommodation Port Douglas – Freestyle Resort

Freestyle Resort in Port Douglas has been on my radar to check out for a while now.

It’s hard to miss their bright cheerful colours and the brilliant blue butterfly (Ullyses) they have on their front wall as you drive into the little resort town of Port Douglas. Luckily we finally got to spend a night here……

Love the drive into Port Douglas

Granted it was a tad confusing as we turned off the palm-lined entrance of Port Douglas and onto the ‘pedestrian’ footpath and into their lobby – OOPS!! Gotta love the inside/outside designs of the tropics....

Yep, there was no mistaking that we had ‘arrived’!! I’m sure most would have mistaken us for the Griswold family out of National Lampoon’s Vacation (and I’m positive it wouldn’t have been the first time).

The kids were easily distracted with all the ponds and frog spotting as we booked in at the lobby and met Anne, who along with her husband Jason have been running the place for the past 15 years!! It’s obvious they offer more than just a roof over your head when you check out the long list of TripAdvisor awards Freestyle Resort has won over the last few years.

And how excited were our kids when they discovered we had a ‘staircase’ in our apartment. Not an option for every family BUT for us it was perfect. They ended up with a whole floor to themselves (you can check our short ‘1 min’ video at the end of this post for a quick overview of the Resort).

The thing that really stood out for me (apart from all the bright tropical colours and fittings) was that the place was spotless and really functional. The bedroom shutter doors worked really well to block out noise when you wanted to shut yourself away, and the balcony provided a great chill spot when the TV was flicked on.

Yep! The TV worked…. Good thing the kids checked that out

The highlight for us was of course the pool area. The kids plunged straight in, after they sorted out the ‘who is sleeping in what bed’ dilemma, and gave the spa a good run for its money. We found the pool 'bin', that was fully stocked with pool toys, pretty handy as well.

There were deep spots for our kids to frolic in, shallow spots for younger kids to play and a spa for the adults after a busy day ‘touring’ the region, but in our case the kids soon took over that part as well.

Are spas a favourite for your kids as well?

The Balinese style setting around the pool and the outside sun lounge area is great. Lots of nooks and crannies to hang out and chill, either on a pool lounge or a hammock chair, lush tropical gardens, a big gazebo with plenty of shade, sunny spots if you’re seeking them and an undercover BBQ area if you want to cook down here rather than in your room. We chose however to eat out that night, but that’s another story…….stay tuned!!!

HOT TIP: Take advantage of Anne & Jason’s extensive knowledge of the region and get their advice on tours. They get feedback from guests all the time on what activities are the best and they will have a good idea as to what activity's will suit your travelling style and needs.
