They see me rolling and they have NO idea at how ‘cool’ it really is. Personally I would never have rated cruising on a Segway – BUT hop on board and take control during one of these Cairns Tours and you might (like me) be in for a pleasant surprise……
These were my first thoughts as I buzzed around the Cairns Parklands weaving between palm trees, and braking and accelerating with an ever so slight movement of my body.
Yes, I had to admit that Segways are SUPER COOL!! After passing my first obstacle course and being given the green light by our instructors (and tour leaders) Dammo and Craig, it was time to hit the Cairns bike paths and ‘open these babies up’ for a real run.
As we hit the path in a convoy of ‘See Me Safety Shirts’ the true beauty of these little 2 wheelers could really be felt. It was ‘cool’, and I mean seriously cool, considering the heat and humidity in Cairns had been pushing up the mercury all week building up to a big wet.
On a Segway you don’t really notice the heat, and you don’t really care. You definitely aren’t working up a sweat – the breeze feels awesome against your face, and you get to see the sights ‘on foot’ – albeit at an average of 10-15 kms/hr which is faster than your average walker (and we got to hit FULL speed later on which was even ‘cooler’).
There was some technical pathway action and road crossings before we hit the real scenic part of the tour, the Centenary Lakes (which is part of the Cairns Botanic Gardens) but thankfully all that manoeuvring beforehand helped us navigate the bridges and eventually go ‘offroad’ (those wheels are truly built to roll on through anything!).
As a local it was nice to be reminded of the Botanical Gardens as I hadn’t been to here for ages and it was the perfect opportunity to show my Aunt and Uncle some of the sights of Cairns (as they were only in town for half a day).
I’m sure the heat and humidity of the day (plus the amount of sandflies and mozzies in this area) would’ve kept us from venturing here if it wasn’t for the set of wheels we were cruising about on.
As we finally rolled back to our starting point on the Cairns Esplanade it was obvious we were going to miss our new found mobility. The pavement felt too hard and our walking speed felt dull in comparison, and it was then that we realised how hot it truly was…. Sure I could’ve shown our visitors the sights via the air-conditioned comfort of the car but I know which ‘touring’ adventure I (and they) would rather be doing (check the video out below to see how FUN it really is).
So the Segway ticks my box now for a ‘supa’ cool way to see a new place and I’ll be looking forward to checking out this option in all the places we visit from now on in!! Seriously, I’m hooked…..
